“If you want something you will find a way to get there. It may take a little bit longer, but it's always worth it. I love to hear about supporters' adventures or who is planning to study marine biology at university, even grandparents telling me about their grandchildren's antics.”
Did you always want to be a Supporter Services Officer?
No. My first job was as a lifeguard and a swimming teacher and I had planned to stay. My circumstances changed. It took a number of years to decide I wanted to work in a customer service capacity. After a few receptionist roles I got more ambitious and have never looked back.
How did you get into this role?
I was working through a temping agency and they sent me to the Marine Conservation Society. I was there for two months and they took me on as an employee. I am still here after seven years. I am still learning and am studying for a Diploma in Customer Services. You are never too old!
What would you say was your biggest challenge getting to where you are?
I developed fibromyalgia six years ago. It is an illness/disease that leaves me with chronic pain and chronic fatigue 24/7. I rely on a wheelchair because it is too painful to walk. Not much is known about it and there is no cure. I have to manage my pain as my medication does not take away the pain but numbs it enough to cope.
I still work full time and do not want to even consider giving up work. At the moment I am in the middle of completing a diploma in customer services. If you want something you will find a way to get there. It may take a little bit longer, but is always worth it. It has been hard to learn to ask for help and I rely heavily on my friends and family.
If you would like to know a little bit more about living with fibromyalgia I recommend that you read The Spoon Theory written by Christine Miserandino it is a story that is a perfect example of learning to ‘choose your battles’.
What’s the best bit about your job?
I love to hear about supporter’s adventures or who is planning to do marine biology at a university, even grandparents telling me about their grandchildren antics. I also work with some fabulous people.
What bit of advice would you give your younger self?
Don’t be so impatient! You will get there.
What’s your favourite sea creature?
It has to be the turtle!
