March for clean waters signs

Protect our ocean ahead of the UN Ocean Conference

Ocean with David Attenborough has sparked a tidal wave of public concern and momentum. This compelling documentary delivers a stark yet hopeful message: the time is now to protect our ocean.

Ahead of the UN Ocean Conference, we’re calling on the UK Government to show true leadership in protecting our ocean.

What we are doing

On 13 May 2025, our Chief Executive, Sandy Luk, sent an open letter to UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and key Cabinet Members urging the UK Government to:

  1. Ratify the High Seas Treaty - a ground-breaking international agreement covering nearly two-thirds of the world’s ocean.
  2. Reaffirm funding for the UK Overseas Territories to look after an area of ocean over sixteen times the size of the UK to protect marine life and habitats.
  3. Work with industry, governments, fishing communities and wider society to find sustainable alternative solutions to unsustainable fishing practices, including supporting fishing communities to transition away from bottom-towed gear.

The High Seas Treaty is a ground-breaking international agreement that covers nearly two-thirds of the world’s ocean. It is essential to achieving the global goal of protecting 30% of the ocean by 2030.

The UK signed the High Seas Treaty nearly two years ago. However, it has still not ratified it.

For this vital agreement to take effect worldwide, the UK Government has an opportunity to lead the international community from the front and lay the legislation before Parliament.

As an island nation, the UK has a historic and moral duty to act to protect our ocean.

Ahead of the UN Ocean Conference, we need your urgent help to press your local MP for robust ocean protections.
