UK’s first ocean literacy strategy launches
Led by the Coasts and Seas Partnership (CaSP Cymru), Y Môr a Ni, which means ‘the sea and us’, aims to grow people’s relationship with our coasts and seas by building awareness of our influence on the ocean and its influence on us.

We’re all connected to the sea. It offers us space for leisure and recreation, from seaside walks to swimming and surfing, and is shown to benefit our health and wellbeing. Our seas support jobs and provide livelihoods for coastal communities, act as a home for a host of marine wildlife, and play a vital role in combatting the impacts of climate change.
The more people are aware of the value of the sea and their connection to it, the more likely they are to take action to look after and protect these amazing spaces. Launching on the 8th of January 2025, Y Môr a Ni aims to foster this connection so that individuals, businesses, and communities across Wales feel empowered and motivated to take positive action for our seas.
We’re overjoyed to see the launch of the UK's first Ocean Literacy Strategy. This strategy is a great example of national collaborative effort. We believe it will play a key role in helping pave the way towards becoming a nation that is connected to our seas and working towards a cleaner, healthier, better-protected ocean.

We’re proud to have helped develop this strategy alongside the Welsh Government and organisations such as Natural Resources Wales, Cardiff University and North Wales Wildlife Trust through CaSP Cymru. This is monumental step in recognising, and raising awareness of, the value of our ocean and our relationship with it.
Through utilising resources like the Y Môr a Ni national strategy, we can deepen our understanding and connection to the coast, support local well-being and play a role in protecting our precious marine environments.
