Celebrating the Outstanding Achievements of our volunteers
1 minute read
We’re extremely grateful to all our dedicated volunteers and the work they do, so each year we celebrate their efforts through our ‘Outstanding Achievement Award’. Meet this year’s winner, Kerrie.
Kerrie Flockhart, one of our Sea Champions, has been volunteering with us for three years and has been a key volunteer in Scotland, where she’s based.
It’s an incredible honour to be given the Outstanding Achievement Award, and I thank the Marine Conservation Society for the amazing work they do and for the ongoing support they’ve given me. I can’t wait to see where my volunteering takes me next!

Earlier this year, she organised a three-day beach clean event on the remote Island of Ulva, which is a short ferry ride from Mull. Kerrie liaised with local tour companies and fishermen who lent their boats, and also arranged to have Ocean Plastic Pots on-site to gather fishing-related waste such as rope, nets, and plastic collected during the clean and use it to create new products.
During this trip, Kerrie hosted Marine Conservation Society education workshops, litter surveys, and helped one of our Volunteer and Community Engagement Managers to run beach sessions. She’s now planning a trip back to Ulva next year, to tackle the litter we couldn’t reach.
Since then, she’s been visiting schools around Edinburgh and bringing ocean learning to the classroom, through workshops with children and adults with additional support needs. She regularly volunteers for local schools, taking them to the beach and building relationships with the young people to help inspire positive change.
Kerrie has been a true inspiration, and we are so grateful for her continued support, drive, enthusiasm, and passion for the ocean.
