The Great Tendring Beach Clean - Walton Beach
Join this beach clean to help us stop harmful litter from reaching the ocean and collect vital data that we can use to bring about positive change for our seas.
Join our group of local litter picking volunteers the WALLYS (Walton Against Lazy Littering) to litter pick the seafront, prom, beach, local parks and green spaces. All equipment is supplied, and bags will be collected at the end by Tendring District Council/Veolia.
We will also be carrying out two beach surveys, to collect data for the Marine Conservation Society - so volunteers are welcome to take part in some Citizen Science if they wish.
There is plenty of sea front free parking - it is permissible to park on nearby single yellow lines too (no restrictions in September).
Families welcome.
Do come along and join us.
Beach stretch details
We will be meeting to carry out beach cleans along a mile stretch of Walton beaches. Some stretches are more likely to have litter, as the sea will not have removed it. In other locations, the strand line is the sea wall, so there is less litter left on the beach (and more unfortunately swept out to sea).
We plan to survey a 100 metre stretch from the Albion Breakwater northwards past the seating shelter, and a second stretch from the East Terrace rocky breakwater northwards towards the Last Fisherman's Cafe.
Also worth knowing…
What to bring: We’d recommend you pack a rucksack with a few essentials like sunscreen, waterproofs, hand sanitiser, and perhaps some snacks and a drink (in a reusable bottle, of course).
What to wear: If you're picking up litter with your hands it's worth wearing a strong pair of gloves - like gardening gloves - just to make sure you're protected. Sturdy shoes are a must for protection too.
Under 16s: To comply with our insurance, volunteers under 16 will need to be accompanied by an adult who will be asked to sign a parental / guardian consent form on the day by the beach clean organiser.
32 spaces remaining - join us on the beach whilst there’s still spaces!
